Press Hydraulic Systems: The Complete Guide

A comprehensive technical reference for hydraulic systems in hot die forging presses, covering overload protection, forced lubrication, hydraulic ejection, and auxiliary circuits.

1. Overload Protection System

The overload protection system is a critical safety mechanism in hot forging presses. It prevents mechanical damage when the press force exceeds the designed capacity due to double-hit, temperature variations, or die mismatch. The system typically consists of a hydraulic cylinder integrated into the press slide or bolster, connected to an accumulator and relief valve set to the maximum allowable pressure.

Hydraulic overload protection offers several advantages over mechanical shear plate designs: faster reset time (typically under 30 seconds), adjustable protection force without mechanical modification, and real-time monitoring capability. The HKM3 series presses incorporate a nitrogen-backed accumulator system that maintains consistent protection force regardless of oil temperature variations.

2. Forced Lubrication System

Modern hot forging presses employ circulating oil lubrication systems that deliver filtered oil at controlled temperature and pressure to all bearing points, guideways, and gear meshes. The system includes a main oil pump, duplex filters (40 micron), oil cooler, temperature control valve, and distribution manifolds with individual flow meter monitoring for each lubrication point.

3. Hydraulic Ejection System

The hydraulic ejection system removes forged parts from the die cavity after each forming cycle. It consists of ejector cylinders mounted in the press bed or slide, controlled by proportional directional valves for adjustable speed and force. Advanced systems incorporate position feedback for precise stroke control and programmable ejection sequences.

4. Ancillary Circuits

Additional hydraulic circuits common in hot forging presses include: clutch/brake control system for slip-free operation, wedge adjustment mechanism for die height setting, counterbalance circuit for slide weight compensation, and die clamping system for quick die change.
