Hot Forging Process Guide

Eight material families with their forging temperature windows, a five-stage process, and the press tonnage each part class needs. Reference data for engineers specifying hot forged parts.

Forging Process Overview

Closed-die hot forging transforms heated metal into precision parts using shaped dies.

Billet Preparation & Heating

Raw material is cut to size and heated to forging temperature (750-1,280 C depending on material).

Pre-Forming

The heated billet is positioned in the first die cavity. A preliminary pressing distributes material roughly.

Final Forging

The pre-formed workpiece moves to the finish cavity. Full press tonnage forms the part.

Flash Trimming & Cooling

The flash is trimmed off. The forging is cooled per material specifications.

Post-Processing

Heat treatment, shot blasting, CNC machining, and NDT inspection. Certified dimensional report provided.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common technical questions from procurement professionals and engineers.

How do I calculate press tonnage for my part?

Peak load (tons) = Flow stress x projected area x shape factor / 9,806. For best results we run a complimentary DEFORM 3D simulation on your part drawing.

What is the minimum order quantity?

MOQ is flexible: from 10 pieces for prototyping up to 100,000+ for mass production. Tooling design and samples are included in the first order.

What tolerances can be achieved with hot forging?

As-forged: +/-0.5 to +/-1.5 mm typically. With precision tooling and process control: +/-0.2 mm on critical dimensions achievable.

How does die design affect forging quality?

Die design determines material flow, grain structure, and dimensional accuracy. We validate all die designs with DEFORM 3D simulation before cutting steel.

What is the difference between hot and cold forging?

Hot forging (above recrystallization) allows more deformation per step and complex shapes. Cold forging gives better surface finish but limited shape complexity.

Crank or toggle press — which should I choose?

Toggle presses (our HKM3 series) maintain ram parallelism within +/-0.05mm under eccentric loads — ideal for multi-cavity dies and complex forgings.
