Hot Forging Tolerance and Quality

Hot Forging Tolerances: Everything You Need to Know
2026 Guide to ISO, DIN, and Achievable Precision Levels

Hot forging holds ±0.2 mm on machined critical dimensions, with ISO 2768-m as the default general tolerance. Specifying ISO 2768-c instead of -f can cut tooling cost 15-25%; anything tighter than ±0.2 mm belongs to machining, not forging.

Achievable Tolerances by Feature Type

FeatureStandard (ISO m-class)Precision (with process control)Comments
Length (up to 250 mm)+/-0.8 mm+/-0.3 mmDepends on die wear and shrinkage compensation
Length (250-1000 mm)+/-1.2 mm+/-0.5 mmThermal expansion effects increase with size
Length (>1000 mm)+/-2.0 mm+/-0.8 mmSignificant shrinkage variation
Draft angle3-7 degrees1-3 degreesLower draft increases die cost
Flatness (per 100 mm)+/-0.5 mm+/-0.15 mmHKM3 toggle press achieves +/-0.05 mm parallelism
Concentricity (die forged)+/-0.6 mm+/-0.2 mmDepends on die alignment
Flash thickness+/-0.5 mm+/-0.2 mmPress stiffness is critical factor

Note: Precision tolerances require additional process controls and may affect tooling cost by 15-30%.

What Affects Forging Tolerances?

How to Specify Tolerances on Your Forging Drawing

When creating a forging drawing, follow these guidelines:

  1. Reference a standard: Always call out a tolerance standard (e.g., "ISO 2768-m" or "DIN 7526 Standard"). This defines the base tolerance for all unspecified dimensions.
  2. Identify critical dimensions: Mark dimensions that need tighter control with a tolerance box. Limit these to 3-5 per part to control costs.
  3. Specify machining stock: Indicate surfaces that will be machined later and the stock allowance per side (typically 0.5-2.0 mm).
  4. Define datum references: Without clear datums, the inspection results can vary by 0.2-0.5 mm just from measurement method differences.
